Artist Statement

I’ve just entered my middle years and am a granddaughter of the Windrush Generation. This forms my portraits, be it the hidden sensuality of middle aged women or British Caribbeans. I use acrylic paint on either linen canvas or kraft paper, painting to very loud jazz as I allow my paint brush to dance across the page and capture the very essence of my subjects.

I want the viewers to connect with their energy, their story, and their very essence to see something of themselves in each painting. I believe middle aged women and British Caribbeans are often invisible, but we have something to say and deserve to be captured, wonky breasts, c-section scars, hoodies and all. My work is about exploring these untold narratives that deserve to be celebrated and respected.
