Bio

Sophia Tristán’s art explores identity, essence, duality, and balance between the inner and outer world. She was born in 1988 in San José, Costa Rica. She received a Bachelor´s in Communication with an emphasis in Creative Communication and Public Relations from Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia and completed her M.F.A. in December, 2017 from the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco. Recent exhibitions include: 57th Venice Biennale Artist Residency, Venice, Italy (2017), Who is She Pop-up Group Show, 111 Minna Gallery, San Francisco, United States (2017), SFAI MFA Exhibition, Fort Mason, San Francisco, United States (2018), Todos Latinos, Group Exhibition, Galería Baga06, Mexico City (2018), Anhelos de un Último Día, Solo Show, Galería Talentum, San Jose, Costa Rica (2019), Democracy Lab opening, America Free Zone, San José, Costa Rica (2019), Solo Show Galería Matíces, and San José, Costa Rica (2020-2021).

Artist Statement

Identity, the constant inward and outward search for authenticity and consciousness examined through personal, familial, natural, and cultural historical identity, has become the basis for exploring pictorial subject matter in my work. The paintings I create, which surround a subject matter with the natural world, have become a way for me to gain physical and emotional agency. This body of work aims to empower by speaking directly to the situations that surround us daily and remind us to give the environment the importance, respect, and love it deserves.
