Statement

Renée Bouchard's work explores internal and external spaces, critically investigating the history and possibilities of abstract-representational painting. Prioritizing the potential of color and of transitional light found in the landscape, she delves into the depiction of luminosity itself, probing the relationship between color and time, exploring the use of color as if it were a machine.  Rather than taking the position that “art is a field of progress,” her work seeks to declare the potential for art to be seen as an activity in building a shared world. The Anonymous Citizen series investigates the potential to unlearn imperialism, challenge the idea of naming, and aim to represent moments of intersectional identity. Escaping the confines of one reality and entering an alternate reality is often where she finds meaning within the complexity of the mind and the emotions it houses.Awards include the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, the Puffin Foundation, and the Vermont Arts Council. Renée has held residencies at the Cooper Union, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Kate Millett Art Colony for Women. Her work has been exhibited at colleges, universities, and galleries nationally.Bouchard received her MFA in visual art from the Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2021, and her BFA in painting with honors from the Maine College of Art and Design in 1999. She lives in Vermont with her young child and dog.
