Patsy McArthur (born 1976, Glasgow Scotland)

Through drawing and painting, McArthur is interested in making imagery associated with the figure in motion: leaping, soaring, diving, falling and the associated emotions that these types of image can trigger in the viewer.

In much of her drawing work, she is concerned with making images that convey a sense of power and energy or potential energy which allude to movement through phsychological states. Drawing has been at the forefront of her practice since her student days and continues to play a crucial role.

With her underwater imagery, she explores similar ideas of suspension and weightlessness and the curious connection between how the human figure can appear in both water and air. She is interested in the “otherness” which comes from being submerged below the surface and the technical challenges associated with drawing and painting the figure through different transparencies of water.

Since completing an MFA in 2001, Patsy has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and internationally, with recent shows in London, Geneva and NYC. She is currently based in Brighton, UK, although spends time gathering material in the turquoise waters of the Balearics.
