Artist Statement

My paintings confront the relationship between our digital lives and our physical bodies. The work reckons with authenticity and performance of identity in a time of prolific image making and sharing online. The lines between the real and unreal at times become blurred when the internet plays a role in how we form our opinions of ourselves and of each other.

What initially compelled you to create your work?

Often times the idea or emotion for a painting stems from a poem I've read.

What main topic does your artwork address and why?

My paintings confront the relationship between our digital lives and physical bodies. The work reckons with authenticity and performance of identity in a time of prolific image making and sharing online. The lines between the real and unreal at times become blurred when the internet plays a role in how we form our opinions of ourselves and of each other.

In your artistic journey, what has been the most challenging point thus far?

Knowing when to let go of perfection. An artist I greatly admire once told me you have to make ten bad paintings for every great painting you make. I try to remind myself of that before I enter the studio.

Is there an aspect of your life that especially impacts your practice?

Growing up, I was a nationally competitive figure skater. Skating left me with a tenacious work ethic and respect for artistry. Skating and art making have always felt very connected to me.

What do you do when you find yourself at a creative block?

Get out of the studio! I'll usually go for a run to clear my head.
