I was educated in fine art and history of art at Goldsmith College, where I was trained to interrogate, contextualise and decode images, to always ask what they represent and how they were achieving that. Often the analogy of artist-as-film-director was used and when planning a piece of work, we were encouraged to approach it as our ‘movie’; to tell a story rather than present a single idea. That early training plays a huge part in how I’ve begun to approach photography and how it signals a transition from straight portraiture to narrative based images. I’m interested in what happens when we see one woman performing more than one role in one frame.
