Biography

Jayne grew up in a small town just north of London. In 1996 she was accepted into Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication to study fashion and textiles where she gained a Bachelor of Arts. She then went onto to study at The Royal College of Art and in 2001 gained her masters degree in womenswear fashion design. Whilst at the the Royal College she was exposed a great many more disciplines in art and the influence of her time there has led Jayne's career to take many different paths. She has worked as a fashion designer in London, and taught fashion to design students. Her love of illustration and the arts was never far behind. Whilst living and working in London she undertook printmaking and life drawing classes at Central St Martins and this led to love of the etching press. After moving to California in 2012, Jayne changed perspective on her career and refocused on her love of printmaking, again taking more print classes to help build on her skills and knowledge. Throughout this her main focus has always been the love of textiles and illustration. Illustration has always been at the core of her work and this has now developed and manifested into the work we see today. During a printmaking residency she started to hone in on her aesthetic to begin a body of work that encompass the elements of her influences of the years. Although printmaking came into her techniques much later in her career, mostly self taught over the years and this is now the main media in her work. Jayne’s work has always been interested in a sense of voyeurism and in particular portraits and figure of the female form. Her background in fashion design and love of the feminine, floral elements play a large part of her works, dressing up and becoming a different persona through clothing and image have a strong foundation in how these abstract portraits have manifested.

A Collection of Unknown Sitters

This collection of work shows portraits in abstract forms to leave something to the interpretation of the viewer. Each portrait is of an unknown person, a sitter, but through hints of recognizable elements, showing suggestions of clothing and suggestions of a face whether it be an eye, a lip or even more abstract than that, are grounded in a strong female forms, although they are unknown in their origin the sitter has a sense of the inner self coming through the works.

Print is the main foundation of the way on which these works are created. A use of machine and the hand combine techniques together to create multilayered pieces. The use of an etching press provide the main stay throughout her works, focussing on monotypes and signal use techniques to ensure each print is original and unique to the next. Like the layers of the human mind and the multi faceted personalities within each of us, the richness of textures and medium not bound to print making alone that build up the layers of these pieces. The reuse of found pieces of print, vintage florals and old decals all bring added textures.
