Miami Art Week 2023 Highlights

After a break in 2022, Create! Magazine was delighted to return to Miami Art Week this year. Always on the lookout for inspiring new talent, it was exciting to attend several shows that delivered exactly that. Read on for some of my favorites:

Scope Art Show

Visiting Scope Art Show on opening night, I was immediately drawn to Claire Oliver Gallery’s booth right at the fair’s entrance. The gallery was exhibiting spectacular works by Gio Swaby and Simone Elizabeth Saunders, among others. Other standout painters included Nadia Were at Mitochondria Gallery, Erik Minter with Mazel Galerie, Jesse Liu with Yiwei Gallery, and Yannick Fournié at Ange Monnoyeur Gallery. For sculpture and installation, it was a treat to see Lucy Sparrow’s recreation of a bagel shop selling her felted food items and, of course, I have to mention Danielle Krysa’s incredible blush pink wall where she displayed “Magic Spells for Modern Gals.”

NADA - New Art Dealers Association

At the New Art Dealers Association fair, I most enjoyed the work of Na Kim at White Columns, Hyegyeong Choi at Harper’s, Losel Yauch at La Loma Projects, and duo Michael Dumontier and Neil with Patel Brown.

Art Miami & Context

While I found Art Miami disappointing overall, it was a pleasure to see the works of previously published artists Kristin Moore and Crystal Latimer to break up the largely monotonous curation of the rest of the fair. Context, on the other hand, was an engaging show with Harman Projects and 33 Contemporary emerging as standout booths, and exemplary works on display by painters Nadine Robbins and Sebastian Riffo Montenegro.

Untitled Art Fair

From the curating to the overall experience of visiting the show, Untitled was my favorite of the fairs this year. Highlight booths included Johansson Projects, Steve Turner, County Gallery, Galerie Forsblom, Albertz Benda, and Niru Ratman.

Art Basel Miami Beach

Although here at Create! Mag we tend to keep an eye on more emerging contemporary artists versus blue-chip and established, the presentations by Vielmetter, James Cohan, Proyectos Monclova, and Nicola Vassell Gallery deserve a mention.

Aqua Art Fair

Previously published artist Raisa Nosova’s glass sculptures were one of the few buzzworthy collections at Aqua and it’s always fun to see JJ Galloway’s arty pigeons. Best booth overall goes to Philadelphia-based gallery Arch Enemy Arts.

Ink Art Fair & Satellite Art Show

It was my first time visiting both Satellite and Ink. At the former, Kyle Hamilton Fine Art was the standout exhibiting artwork by Lucas Bononi and Justyna Kisielewicz, among others. For me, the best rooms at Ink were Highpoint Editions, Tamarind Institute, Flying Horse Editions, TAG Fine Arts, and Tandem Press.

Miscellaneous Highlights

Attending an event hosted by Instagram sensation CJ Hendry has been on my bucket list for years and I finally got to cross it off at the public unveiling of her first outdoor public sculpture HOOOOOOPS. I also was very glad to have the chance to stop by two fabulous museum exhibitions, Hernan Bas at The Bass and Sasha Gordon at the ICA Miami.

Conclusion

Phew! That was a lot of art in just a few short days. Thanks, Miami, hope to see you next year!
