Heather Sundquist Hall is a painter based in Texas. She grew up on Long Island in New York and attended the Fashion Institute of Technology before heading to Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia to pursue art education and illustration. After nearly a decade in Philadelphia, Heather and her pitbull, Chickie, packed up and headed to Texas with the promise of giant skies and sunsets for days. They haven’t looked back since. She, her husband, Michael W. Hall, who also is a painter, live and work in a tiny town called Smithville, just outside of Austin.

Heather’s work has been exhibited around the country, most recently at the Webb Gallery in Waxahatchie, Texas, Hey There Projects in Joshua Tree, CA, and in Portland, Oregon at Gallery Nucleus. Heather’s freelance illustrations have been featured in Breathe Magazine, Birth.Death.Movies, the Alamo Draft house Magazine in addition to Spirituality and Health Magazine.

Statement

Heather's work is based in storytelling. Much of it depicts familiar Americana in an attempt to honor what all too often becomes forgotten. She also pays tribute to personal memories, focusing on the details, especially quieter aspects, like a specific pattern of wallpaper or the plaid of a couch she remembers from her grandparents home growing up.

Size is an important component in her gouache paintings. Heather’s paintings are often small but full of rich detail, often forcing the onlooker to lean in close and pause while exploring the work. The intention of thisis to encourage the viewer to rest and reflect on their own stories and memories. Nature and time of day also play a role in the narrative of her work, particularly focusing on the vast Texas landscape as well as overgrown and forgotten terrain.
