My name is Asta Ostrovskaja, I am a Multidisciplinary Visual Artist/ Art Director from Vilnius Lithuania. My background in Visual Art, Art Direction and Graphic Design leaded me to be interested in an abstract documentation of the contemporary life. Experience which I gained working in different visual fields reflects in the discourse of my work.

The field of interests which I explore could be named as a junction between:

- real and surreal

- abstract and concrete

- humor and sadness

- nostalgia and futurism

- tangibility and stiffness

- 2D and 3D

What initially compelled you to create your work?

The project I present here is called GLIMPSES FROM A VIRTUAL ROAD TRIP - it is an ongoing painting project, which I started at the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic when all the travel plans had to be cancelled.

In this project, I captured the gaze through a virtual window of the Google Street View car and added a layer of surreal narrative to it. Sitting comfortably in the passenger's seat, which took the form of a sofa, I started to observe changing panoramas in a virtual journey through the browser window, instead of looking through one in a rented road trip vehicle.

I looked for landscapes which have a combination of ordinary and unexpected elements. Visual details were added in each glimpse from a virtual road trip to emphasize that combination.

I transformed mundane panoramas into paintings and created a cinematic atmosphere by integrating elements such as neon lights, dusk, non-existing poetic billboards, abandoned household items and distant characters.

What main topic does your artwork address and why?

The field of interests which I explore could be named as a junction between:

- real and surreal
- abstract and concrete
- humor and sadness
- nostalgia and futurism
- tangibility and stiffness
- 2D and 3D

Capturing unexpected moments in mundane surroundings, whether it is digital or analog space, works as a form of creative freedom in connection to my artistic practice.

The GLIMPSES FROM A VIRTUAL ROAD TRIP project aims to transform ordinary and mundane elements into extraordinary and picturesque experiences to evoke excitement and curiosity of everyday life for the audience.

In your artistic journey, what has been the most challenging point thus far?

Navigating time - how to find the right balance between working too intensely in a condensed period of time and vice versa - working too slow so that the rhythm of productivity is disbalanced amongst daily routine.

Is there an aspect of your life that especially impacts your practice?

I am a Multidisciplinary Visual Artist and an Art Director. My background in Visual Art, Art Direction and Graphic Design led me to be interested in an abstract documentation of the contemporary life. Experience which I gained working in different visual fields reflects in the discourse of my work.

What do you do when you find yourself at a creative block?

I try not to overthink. Usually that block appears due to other reasoning than the creative practice itself. If I feel that the productivity is on a lower part I try to work on small zones or start to sketch a new idea.
