Courtney Heather is a painter living and working in Brooklyn, New York. Being a Southern California native and growing up in suburbia, her influences are stemmed from popular culture. Ideas that provoke such pleasure in being seduced by the familiar and the unknown are depicted in her paintings, with subjects being people and most recently, food.

Statement

Novels, films, and music have an alluring effect on us because unlike memories, they provide tangible duplicates for us to experience endlessly.

Temporary moments are what inspire my work. To me, painting mirrors an illusion similar to mainstream media portraying an idealized version of reality. When I paint, I’m recreating an image; it’s a copy of a copy of life.

My paintings are referenced from compiled video stills and photographs. The still itself represents a paused moment and by capturing these specific scenes and painting them, it’s reviving a temporary occurrence. This questions the tendency of preserving pleasurable things and refusing to forget them.
