Born in September 1983 in Reunion Island, Christel Bernard graduated from a specialized high school in Applied Arts with highest honours.

After graduating from École Estienne in Paris in 2003 and Ecole Supérieure d’Arts Appliqués (higher National Diploma of Applied Arts) in 2006, she exhibited at FIAC Luxe by winning the first prize in the Comité Colbert contest.

For years, she evolved between art, graphic design throughout nature and urbanism but she mostly has been influenced by her experience in Paris where she developed a passion for fashion and textile creations. Her artist’s reflexion is often based on visuals, their glamorization, memorization, remembrance and composition.

Sometimes forced to be bedridden, Christel has found a way to create through contemporary tools on mobile applications, such as Instagram, that diverted from their function, allow her to satisfy her need to create. She is currently focusing on visual score to create a graphic language inspired by Reunion Island’s culture.

The drawings (in dark ink or in pencils) were all done while she was lying down. After a spine surgery she wasn’t able to move so she starts drawing this way, it allows her to overcome her pain and erase the frustration. Women’s body transformation and degradation are at the heart of her work.
