Artist Statement

As a collage artist Amber’s primary goal is to get as close as possible to visualizing scenes of ultimate freedom. Amber is influenced by her visions of God, heaven, and creation, of the seasons as supreme beings, inner peace for all Black people, and lush gardens for Black babies. She is inspired by beauty, romance, sensory experiences, mood swings, and rebellion. Her collage practice serves to exercise her imagination. In doing so she learns more about myself, clarifies her worldview, practices vulnerability, and promotes the power of the imagination as a liberatory concept for all of us seeking community, equity, and love. All of this so that we can discover new ways of being and relating to each other.  

Bio

Amber Janay Cooper is an emerging DC-based collage artist who uses the visions spun by her imagination to fuel her work. Originally from Georgia, Amber also lived for some years in the Shenandoah Valley. She began her collage practice in 2022.
