My work explores emotionally charged situations, and I pull my subjects from my own life. In my paintings, I tackle feeling conflicted in the typically female roles of mother, nurturer, and caretaker. I paint about a deep love for flawed parents, who caused emotional damage, as all parents do. I also paint about mental illness that runs in my family, especially anxiety and depression.

Amy McCormac grew up as the middle of three girls in an artistic family in Chicago. Her father was an art director for textbook companies, and her mother was a Sunday painter, who did freelance illustration. She received her BFA from Mundelein College, now part of Loyola University. After tiring from years of painting alla prima, she began to create paintings that represented her own life and point of view. She feels this recent body of work represents her true artistic voice
