I received an MFA from SAIC and work from a studio in mountainous rural Jamaica. Much of my inspiration comes from the rich biodiversity I observe. In my practice, I assemble fascinating unrelated forms both natural and human made, which create visual relationships and new contexts for these images. I continuously hunt for what captivates me, save pictures and make models. My paintings employ a decorative language and amalgamate different elements to create fantastical figures. They contain components such as clothing, costume, plants, flowers, sea life etc. and are poised and placed in a verdant or dramatic environment. I slowly build up thin layers of paint on smooth surfaces. These created entities provide a natural framework for image making and also represent a celebration of womankind in mutual symbiosis with nature. Ostensibly, these combinations are painted in a cogent way to suggest something phantasmagorical. Driven to honor nature’s mystery, I often incorporate the ambient landscape. As I explore the human/nature interface, and its complex interconnectedness, I’m reminded that human kind and the natural world are one inseparable unitary whole. It is important we feel this deep connection to our planet that is in crisis.
