The Fall Edition of the Affordable Art Fair NYC is a continued celebration of the fair's 20th Anniversary in New York, a two-decade history in a city that has often set the pace with the global art world.

The Curatorial Excellence Award underscores the fair's continued focus on pushing the envelope on dynamic presentations and encouraging galleries to both create a marketable and covetable presentation, but to consider the tone, format, and content of the works they present.

This year’s award was determined by an all-female jury who took care to assess the merits of the 70 exhibiting galleries with thoughtful consideration. The jury participants included Marina Press Granger (Founder of The Artist Advisory), Veronica Petty (Domingo Comms), and Emily McElwreath (Founder of McElwreath Art Advisory, Host of The Art Career Podcast).

The galleries presented with the 2022 Curatorial Excellence Award and Honorable Mention are distinct in their approach. Wolf & Nomad (A2), a native Miami gallery, was a repeat-forerunner among the jury and earned the First Place recognition this year.

With a focus on showcasing Latin American artists, the gallery created a cohesive narrative, teasing out nuance and similarity across each of the artists' practices spanning collage and mixed media.

Christian Abusaid's pieces move the viewer through a textural color gradient. The subtle composition juxtaposed with the bold use of color prompts contemplation on conditions of beauty. As a transformative artist, he creates an experience through pigments and texture.

Alternatively, Luciano Denver (Argentina) creates photo montages, adding layers of imagination, digital post-processing, and whimsy within the work. These fantastical architectural settings function as pictorial collages across culture. Artworks by Mariel Lebrija (Mexico City) and Wolf & Nomad co-founder Simon Vargas (Colombia) anchor the presentation and provide fair-goers with must-see works that have been a part of the gallery stable for years.

Jurors cited that the founders of Wolf & Nomad were welcoming, knowledgeable, and forthcoming about each artist and work. The pieces were showcased in an elegant manner allowing space to breathe but also creating a synergistic dialogue across content and media. Two of the jurors specifically noted the appreciation for learning about different Latin American cultures respective to the artists on view, and taking away a greater appreciation for the storytelling fostered through the presentation.

Honorable Mention was awarded to first-time Affordable Art Fair exhibitor PxP Contemporary (C2) a curated online gallery based between Costa Rica and Philadelphia. The booth's presentation benefitted from a sense of intimacy and was inviting nature.

Another gallery sharing a Latin American identity though focused on a more domestic curation, PxP benefits from a strong sense of identity and a bright, bold, and varied curation.

Beyond being an eye-catching booth in itself, several jurors were immediately drawn to works by up-and-coming artists Jen Dwyer and Ingrid Wells.

Beyond the galleries named for this year’s Curatorial Excellence Award, several galleries were cited as stand-outs at this season's fair. Among the galleries praised for curatorial distinction were Marisol Art NYC (New York, NY), SINGULART (Digital Gallery), treat gallery (New York City, NY), and Commonweal (Philadelphia, PA).

Congratulations

are in order for all 70 exhibitors at the Fall 2022 edition of the Affordable Art Fair NYC whose generous contributions and impressive presentations distinguish the fair as a favorite among culture-seekers, seasoned collectors, and aspiring connoisseurs alike!
