Artist Statement

I want these paintings to call the viewer’s mind beyond the surface of the work, and I mean that literally. I want the movement and conceptual aspects of the actual imagery to take their eyes off of the surface. That goal affects the manner of the compositions and it is also affected by considering where the painting will end up. So, those things have changed my process in important ways and I expect that it will continue to change over time. The lines, the apparent order, the chaos they spring from, are a visual iteration of how people typically approach life. I continue to think “line” is a dynamic analogy for us, even to the way we begin our day, waking up; our thoughts emerge from a cloudy mass, for example, and we begin to plot our course for the day. If you’ve ever tracked yourself with GPS you’ll know exactly what I mean. These paintings are a kind of visual iteration of that idea.
