Artist Biography & Statement:
My name is Carlos Hernandez and I am an artist studying Photography & Imaging at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. A 2019 YoungArts winner and Gordon Parks scholar, my photographic work has been exhibited across the US, including in places such as Sotheby's Auction house in New York, and the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey. Moreover, my film work has been acclaimed internationally through the Golden Door International Film Festival as the recipient of the 2018 James Gandolfini Future Filmmaker's Award.
This new series 'Queer Alienism' was an idea borne out of my own experience as a queer person. Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in a Roman Catholic household, this was a combination that emotionally and legally rejected my existence through the criminalization and ostracism of homosexuality and gender expansivity. Long before I had the vocabulary to voice my truth, the one thing I was aware of was this exclusion. These works speak to the feeling of exclusion while simultaneously exploring the ways in which queer people build support systems with each other. The relationships may be platonic or romantic in that sense, but ultimately I hope to convey the sense of trust, support, and comfort that I have found amongst my chosen family.
