Painter & photographer Alphonse Lane was born in the Philadelphia suburbs in 1961. His first exposure to the visual arts was from his mother who procured a chalkboard with colored chalk and a scroll with drawings to copy. He always excelled in art classes throughout his life and at the age of 11 was given his first camera because of his love of making and taking pictures. As he grew and matured, he attended his first formal art class in 1979 in the autumn of his senior year of high school. Upon graduation, he went on to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Lane earned a CFA from PAFA 1986, his BFA from The University of Pennsylvania in 1995, and then returned to the Academy for his MFA between 2002-2004. He currently lives and works in the quiet solitude of his studio in Berwyn, PA.
Artist Statement
Since the age of my youth, I have been in love with flowers and I still reminisce of the time the aroma of the hyacinth would drift into the dining room of my childhood home in Haverford. My first floral painting was of a daisy, a small work of about 14” x 10”, and my latest of 2020 is of a daffodil measuring 40” x 40”. I have turned to photography for the factual reason, capturing the eloquent essence so beautifully as a camera does is something that leaves me in unending awe.
